Kaija Straumanis, a grad student and photographer in New York, always had a sharp eye for photography. One particular series of funny self-portraits stand out the most, called “Stuff Being Thrown at My Head” courtesy of Reddit. This series that captures random objects hitting Straumanis in the face has gone completely viral on the internet.
The best thing about these funny self-portraits is that they are captured perfectly. Each image flawlessly captures the exact moment when the object hits her with her flailing glasses, disarrayed hair and mashed-up face. With these pictures, Straumanis has turned everyday scenes of reading a book or talking a walk in the park into funny scenarios.
These funny self-portraits also seem to represent epiphanies visually. It represents the moment a realization or an idea hits you like a dozen of bricks (or a kickball or a boot).
Although photography is just a hobby for the NYC literary translator and editor, Straumanis plans to keep taking such funny self-portraits and make a calendar out of them. Well, she already has photographs of Easter eggs and pumpkin, so it will only be a matter of time before she accomplishes her goals. However, Straumanis admits that she likes macro photography and travel photography much more as is evident from her Flickr galley.
Straumanis originally called this project “Headshots”. She states that this project has helped her grow personally. She used to be really self-conscious about her photos and took them in secret, but now she goes to a public place like a park to shoot her self-portraits with things like a pumpkin.
